Gig Tribes

Photographer James Mollison's project  The Disciples, is a brilliant study of social groups coming together for concerts. He describes how the project began as such:

Over three years I photographed fans outside different concerts. I was fascinated by the different tribes of people that attended them, and how people emulated celebrity to form their identity. As I photographed the project I began to see how the concerts became events for people to come together with surrogate 'families', a chance to relive their youth or try and be part of a scene that happened before they were born.

The result are these funny and kinda sweet portraits.

It kinda makes you think about the people you know and how they fit in. I definitely know some Klaxon type people - I work in advertising. I also know some Oasis types.

I've always been a music aficionado and my sons are musicians in a rock band. Every gig I've attended seems to take on a personality of its own, but there are also universal constants contained within: the girl who dances alone, the guy who plants himself squarely in front of the guitarist or bass player, etc. Great subject and photos!

im sure you could break these groups down into specific roles as you say Helena. There are also probably people who idolise certain band members.

There was one group where I didn't even have to read the caption to know what music they liked.
The Cliff Richard fans, obviously.
Good post.

Absolutely amazing portraits Aimee, I've never seen anything like it. I worked on a music related advertising project when I was at synergyagency.co.uk and we tried to re-create the "queueing in line for a gig" atmosphere for a couple of campaigns but found it impossible to do so without actually being there. You must have had some charm to convince these guys and girls to pose so well!

Sadly William I didn't take these pictures. I am just a lowly blogger showing other people's great work.
